Lankan Catholic leader calls for ceasefire to help civilians
Thu, Mar 12 2009
The Roman Catholic Bishop of Jaffna, in northern Sri Lanka, has called for a ceasefire between government forces and Tamil separatist rebels.
Bishop Thomas Savundaranayagam says the fate of tens-of-thousands of civilians is at stake, as the government tries to destroy the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam.
Bishop Savundaranayagam says a ceasefire would allow the civilians to get out of the conflict zone.
The Bishop has been working with civilians who have managed to leave the zone and are now living in government-controlled camps in Jaffna.
He told Brami Jegan they support claims that the LTTE is forcibly preventing other civilians from leaving.
