SBS's Commissioning Editor for Drama Debbie Lee is leaving SBS to take up a new position at the ABC.

Debbie Lee has overseen the development and production of many highly successful programs at SBS including John Safran's Music Jamboree, John Safran Versus God and Speaking in Tongues.

She commissioned the AFI Award winning comedy Wilfred, the comedy soap Kick and the powerful Indigenous drama series The Circuit. Debbie also commissioned feature film The Home Song Stories which won eight AFI awards last week.

SBS Director of Television and Online Content Matt Campbell said:

"I am saddened by Debbie's decision to leave SBS and she will be greatly missed in our commissioning team not only for her professional instinct and skills but because she is a joy to work with. After 14 loyal years of service to the network I can only wish her the best of luck in her new role and the future."

Debbie Lee said: "I've really enjoyed my time at SBS. It has been a delight to work with intelligent, thoughtful filmmakers and colleagues who are driven by a high regard for the values expressed in the SBS Charter. It is important that SBS continues to distinguish itself as a unique voice in the media landscape."

Home Song Stories director Tony Ayers said: "Debbie will be greatly missed at SBS. Her sense of humour, her incisive judgement and her lightness of touch have been of invaluable assistance to writers, directors and producers alike. We wish her all the best with the next stage of her career".

John Safran said: "Debbie Lee always went in to bat for my ideas. She is a great advocate for creative people in the industry and is highly respected by those she works with."
